Shiroishi Castle, Japanese castle in Shiroishi, Japan
Shiroishi Castle sits on a 76-meter-high hill at the northern tip of a narrow ridge between the Ou Mountains and the Abukuma Highlands. The wooden three-story tower and gates stand as reconstructions built to match the original plans from the Edo period.
Construction began in 1591 as an outpost of Sendai Castle under the management of the Katakura clan. The family served as vassals to the Date lords and kept the fortress through centuries until the Meiji period brought an end to their stewardship.
The three-story wooden tower and gates were reconstructed in 1995, following historical specifications to represent traditional Japanese castle architecture of the Edo period.
The site opens from 9:00 to 17:00 between April and October, and from 9:00 to 16:00 from November to March. Admission costs 400 yen for adults.
The grounds offer 66 different commemorative stamps that visitors collect during their tour. These stamps feature different designs and motifs related to the history and architecture of the site.
