Sankai Falls

Sankai Falls is a roughly 180-meter-tall waterfall located in the Zao area of Miyagi Prefecture, dropping through a narrow rocky channel carved into the mountainside. The water descends over steep stone faces, creating a striking natural formation that stands out clearly against the surrounding forested terrain.

The waterfall received official recognition from Japan's Ministry of the Environment in 1990 when it was included in the nation's Top 100 Waterfalls list. This designation established it as a notable natural site within the broader network of protected locations across Miyagi.

The waterfall holds deep connections to local customs as residents of Miyagi Prefecture incorporate its presence into traditional celebrations throughout seasonal changes.

Spring is the best season to visit, as water volume peaks and morning light provides the most favorable viewing conditions. Marked hiking trails and observation platforms offer access to different viewpoints around the waterfall.

Water flows consistently throughout the year thanks to the waterfall's position at about 770 meters elevation on the Sumikawa River system. This dependable water source makes it a stable natural feature regardless of the season.
