Zaō Onsen, Sulfur spring resort in Tōhoku region, Japan.
Zaō Onsen is a thermal resort located on Mount Zao's slopes in the Tōhoku region at about 880 meters above sea level. The town spreads across multiple areas with public baths, hotels, and facilities arranged around the natural hot springs.
This thermal resort was established roughly 1,900 years ago and ranks among Japan's oldest mountain spa destinations. Over the centuries, the location became a recognized place where people sought relief through the hot spring waters.
The springs here are traditionally valued in Japan for their cleansing properties on the skin, and visitors come to experience the different mineral baths throughout the resort area.
Roads in winter can be slippery and require careful driving, and most visitors wear slip-resistant shoes when moving between bath areas. Some outdoor bathing sections close seasonally, so it helps to check which pools are open before your visit.
The water here contains an unusual mix of three different mineral types, each producing different effects on the body. Visitors often notice the strong sulfur smell and that the water can temporarily discolor the skin.
