Yamagata Prefecture, Prefecture in Tohoku Region, Japan

The northern prefecture encompasses 9,325 square kilometers of mountainous terrain, fertile valleys, and coastal areas along the Sea of Japan in northern Honshu.

The prefecture emerged from the former Dewa Province in 1876, marking a shift from feudal domains to modern administrative regions during the Meiji Restoration.

The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival occurs every two years, drawing filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts from across the globe to screen documentary productions.

Two regional airports, Shonai and Yamagata, connect the prefecture with major Japanese cities through regular flights to Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo.

Mount Zao contains a crater lake that changes color throughout the seasons and features natural hot springs where visitors can bathe while viewing snow-covered peaks.
