Michinoku Lakewood National Government Park, National park in Kawasaki, Japan
Michinoku Lakewood is a national government park situated near Mount Zao with flower fields, wooded areas, and traditional rural structures positioned along Lake Kamafusa. The grounds span several zones with different landscapes, walking paths, and visitor facilities arranged throughout the property.
The park was established in 1989 as the first national government park in the Tohoku region of northern Japan. This opening reflected a broader effort to preserve rural landscapes and traditional heritage in that part of the country.
The park displays seven authentic farmhouses sourced from different prefectures across the Tohoku region, each representing distinct regional building styles and rural traditions. Visitors can step inside these structures to see how families lived and worked in earlier times.
The park provides lodging options including cottages and tent sites, with cooking facilities and restrooms spread across the grounds. Visitors should plan their trip around seasonal changes, as the landscape transforms through the year with different plants blooming and events taking place at certain times.
In early November, the park hosts a seasonal event featuring LED lights and bamboo lanterns that illuminate the grounds at night. This temporary installation occurs for only a few weeks and creates a different visual experience compared to daytime visits.
