第二広瀬川橋梁, Railway bridge in Kamiayashi, Japan
The Second Hirose River Bridge is a railway bridge in Kamiayashi that spans about 134 meters across the river. It features a distinctive truss structure made of steel with multiple support pillars rising from the riverbed.
The bridge was built in 1931 as an important engineering achievement connecting the Sendai and Yamagata regions via the Senzan railway line. It demonstrated its structural strength during the 2011 Eastern Japan Earthquake.
The bridge stands as an engineering symbol in the region, where local residents gather during seasonal festivals to celebrate their community heritage.
The bridge sits between Rikuzen-shirasawa and Kumagane stations and can be viewed from passing trains year-round. It rises about 52 meters above the water level, making it visible from a considerable distance away.
Until 2010, this bridge held the record as the tallest trestle-type structure of its kind in Japan. This distinction reflects the remarkable engineering skill required in its design and construction.
