桜橋, Historic bridge in Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan
The Sakura Bridge connects sections of Kita-ku across the former Sonezaki River, marking an important intersection in downtown Osaka.
The original wooden bridge stood until 1909 when the Great Northern Fire destroyed both the structure and the Sonezaki River it crossed.
The bridge location appears in Chikamatsu Monzaemon's puppet theater play 'The Love Suicides at Amijima' as a place of farewell.
Although the bridge no longer exists, its name remains at the Sakura Bridge intersection where Sonezaki Street meets Yotsubashi Street.
The name originated from an ancient cherry tree that fell and served as a natural crossing point over the river.
