Jōmyō-ji

Jōmyō-ji is a Buddhist temple in Arida with a striking bronze roof and traditional Japanese gardens throughout the grounds. Stone paths link different areas and guide visitors through the calm spaces.

The temple was founded in 1188 and became an important place for the Ashikaga family during medieval times. Its close connection to this ruling clan shaped its role over several centuries.

The grounds are easy to walk around, with clear paths between the different areas of the temple. The best time to visit is in the morning, when the gardens are quieter and less crowded.

There is a tea house called Kisen-an on the grounds where visitors can take part in tea ceremonies. The view of a rock garden while preparing and drinking tea makes this a memorable experience for those interested in local traditions.
