Mount Asakuksa, Volcanic summit in Niigata and Fukushima Prefectures, Japan
Mount Asakuksa rises over 900 meters above sea level, featuring multiple hiking trails through dense forests and rocky terrain across two different prefectures.
The mountain has served as a natural boundary between Niigata and Fukushima Prefectures since the establishment of Japan's modern administrative divisions in 1871.
Bodhisattva statues line the mountain paths, reflecting the deep connection between Buddhist practices and mountain worship in Japanese traditional culture.
Visitors can access the mountain through several trailheads, with hiking times ranging from one to two hours depending on the chosen route and weather conditions.
The summit shelter provides free overnight accommodation with futons, allowing hikers to rest and witness both sunset and sunrise from the same location.
