第五只見川橋梁, Steel truss bridge in Kaneyama, Japan
The Fifth Tadami River Bridge is a steel truss structure that crosses the Tadami River in a mountainous region of Fukushima Prefecture. The structure supports railway traffic on the JR Tadami Line, linking communities on either side of the river valley.
The bridge was built in 1957 originally to move construction materials for a hydroelectric power project in the region. It later became a permanent railway connection on the JR Tadami Line.
This engineering structure represents mid-20th century Japanese railway infrastructure development and connects remote mountain communities in Fukushima Prefecture.
Access is via the JR Tadami Line, which runs through the mountains of Fukushima Prefecture. Spring through fall offers the most comfortable viewing conditions, as winter weather can impact train schedules.
The bridge employs a Warren truss design with curved elements, an uncommon approach for large river crossings in Japan. A severe rainstorm in summer 2011 caused significant damage to the structure that required restoration work.
