Aburajima Bridge, Transportation bridge in Japan.
Aburajima Bridge is a road and rail bridge spanning Lake Nakaumi to connect Tottori and Shimane prefectures. The steel structure carries both cars and trains across the water where a ferry service previously operated.
Construction began in 1997 and the bridge opened to traffic in 2004, replacing an older drawbridge. The drawbridge had restricted traffic flow due to limited daily crossing capacity.
The bridge design incorporates elements of Japanese engineering principles, reflecting the nation's approach to infrastructure development and transportation solutions.
Access is available by car or train with stops near both shores making it easy to reach. Parking and rest areas are located on each side of the crossing for travelers who need to stop.
The bridge approaches slope at different angles on each side, which drivers notice while crossing. This asymmetrical design arose from the geographical needs of the two connecting shores.
