Fukaya Cinema, Movie theater in Fukaya, Japan
Fukaya Cinema occupies a former sake brewery building and features a small screening room equipped with both 35mm film and digital projection systems. The space holds about 60 seats and preserves the original building structure while accommodating modern cinema equipment.
The building started as the Nanatsu-Ume sake brewery established in 1694 and maintained its external architecture through successive generations. When sake production declined, the structure found new life as a cultural venue with cinema.
The cinema shows international films each month that are rarely screened elsewhere in the Kanto region, while two gallery spaces support local artists. This programming makes it a gathering place for people interested in independent and art cinema.
The venue sits about ten minutes walk from Fukaya Station on the JR Takasaki line, making it accessible by local train. Visitors can bring their own blankets or use those provided to stay comfortable during screenings.
The theater maintains a deliberate choice to screen exclusively in 35mm film format rather than switching entirely to digital projection. This commitment to traditional film stock sets it apart from most contemporary cinemas and appeals to cinema enthusiasts.
