Senomoto plateau, Highland plateau between Kumamoto and Oita Prefecture, Japan
Senomoto Plateau spreads across rolling grasslands and mountain ranges between the Aso region and Yufuin, connected by straight roads. The terrain shows natural vegetation patterns with open vistas across the high elevation landscape.
The area was developed during the 1950s as a connection point between Kumamoto and Oita prefectures. It became part of the Yamanami Highway, a road network linking the two regions.
The plateau hosts seasonal flower festivals throughout the year where visitors encounter vast displays of tulips, lavender, and cosmos flowers. These blooms shape the landscape from spring through autumn and draw people interested in nature.
The area is best explored by car, as long straight roads cut through the plateau making navigation simple. The Senomoto Rest House provides recreational activities for visitors passing through.
During mid to late October, millions of Chestnut Tiger Butterflies pass through the plateau during their seasonal migration. This natural event transforms the landscape into a corridor for these traveling insects.
