Byakugo-ji

Byakugo-ji is a Buddhist temple in the mountainous Tamba region with historic roots. An arched stone bridge called Taiko Bashi spans the Shinji-ike pond, where hundreds of colorful Nishiki koi fish swim and bring the water to life.

The temple was founded in 705 as part of the Tendai Buddhist school. This early establishment made it one of the first Buddhist sites in the Tamba mountain region.

The temple grounds display seasonal Japanese plants such as wisteria, ferns, rhododendrons, water lilies, and lotus flowers at different times of year. The blooming gardens shape how visitors experience the spiritual character of this place.

The grounds are easy to navigate and visitors can walk freely through the temple area. You can reach the administration office if you need detailed information or want to arrange something in advance.

The Taiko Bashi bridge holds special meaning as a symbol of transition between the mortal world and the Buddhist realm. Local believers view this crossing as an important part of their spiritual practice at this location.
