Byakugo-ji

Byakugo-ji is a Buddhist temple in the mountainous Tamba region with historic roots. An arched stone bridge called Taiko Bashi spans the Shinji-ike pond, where hundreds of colorful Nishiki koi fish swim and bring the water to life.

The temple was founded in 705 as part of the Tendai Buddhist school. This early establishment made it one of the first Buddhist sites in the Tamba mountain region.

The temple grounds display seasonal Japanese plants such as wisteria, ferns, rhododendrons, water lilies, and lotus flowers at different times of year. The blooming gardens shape how visitors experience the spiritual character of this place.
