Chikurin-ji

Chikurin-ji is a Buddhist temple in Higashihiroshima featuring a striking red five-story pagoda set within traditional Japanese gardens. The grounds contain stone pathways, maple trees, and a 14th-century garden that holds the designation of a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

The temple was established in 724 and has served as a center for Buddhist learning and spiritual practice for over 1300 years. Its centuries-long presence reflects its importance in the religious life of the region.

The temple honors Monju Bosatsu, the Buddhist deity of wisdom, and you will see students coming to pray for success in their studies. Visitors often leave small offerings and written wishes, turning the grounds into a place where people express their hopes for academic achievement.
