Hida Great Limestone Cave is a solutional cave system in Takayama featuring interconnected underground passages with complex rock formations. The cave opens into sections that reveal layered walls and natural hollows carved by ancient water flow.
The cave began forming around 250 million years ago when the region lay beneath the ocean. Flowing water gradually carved out the underground system into its present network.
The Ohashi Collection Kan Museum, connected to the cave complex, displays 1000 art pieces and decorative objects from different regions of the world.
The cave is accessible on foot with marked pathways through the different sections. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground surface can be uneven and slippery in places.
The cave features rare helictite formations with curved and angular shapes that develop under specific conditions. These unusual mineral growths are found in very few locations worldwide and create memorable visual contrasts.
