Shigitatsu-an

Shigitatsu-an is a historic building in Oiso with wooden structures elevated on posts that open toward the garden. The rooms feature timber-shingled exteriors and traditional sliding doors that allow flexible division of interior spaces.

Built in 1664 during the Edo period, the building shows construction methods common to that era. Its design reflects how Japanese homes were adapted to local climate and available materials at that time.

The building displays traditional Japanese features such as tatami mats, paper sliding doors, and a veranda connecting interior rooms with the garden. These elements reflect how people lived in harmony with their surroundings during this historical period.

The sunken design sits about 60 centimeters below ground level, keeping temperatures cool in summer and warm in winter. This construction helps maintain comfortable indoor conditions throughout the year.

Four separate blocks covered with soil from the excavation surround the main building and create distinct functional areas. These attached structures serve as traditional rooms and kitchen spaces.
