Shigitatsu-an

Shigitatsu-an features wooden structures elevated off the ground, with timber-shingled upper volumes and traditional sliding doors throughout the interior spaces.

Built in 1664 during the Edo period, this structure demonstrates the architectural methods and materials commonly used in 17th-century Japanese construction.

The building incorporates tatami mat flooring, shoji screens, and an engawa veranda that connects indoor spaces with the surrounding natural environment.

The structure's sunken design, positioned 60 centimeters below ground level, maintains cool temperatures in summer and retains warmth during winter months.

Four distinct blocks coated in soil from the excavation site surround the main building, creating separate functional areas for traditional rooms and kitchen spaces.
