Fernsehturm Hiratsuka, Television broadcast relay station in Hiratsuka, Japan
The Fernsehturm Hiratsuka is a broadcast relay tower on the Shonan-dai peak in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, transmitting signals for several television networks. It is equipped with antenna arrays and parabolic reflectors that allow the signal to be sent in multiple directions at once.
The facility was completed in 1972 and started out as a relay station for TVK before being expanded to serve NHK and several Tokyo-based networks. That expansion extended reliable coverage to more communities across Kanagawa Prefecture.
The tower stands visibly on the Shonan-dai peak and acts as a reference point that residents of the Hiratsuka area have grown up seeing on the horizon. For many people in Kanagawa, it is simply the structure that keeps their television signal reliable day after day.
The tower sits on a hilltop, so reaching it on foot may require some effort depending on the path taken. As an active facility, public access to the grounds is generally restricted, and the structure is best appreciated from a distance.
The tower uses a dual-loop antenna system that was technically uncommon when it was built, setting it apart from typical relay stations of its time. This design allows it to serve multiple broadcasters in different directions without needing separate structures for each one.
