Unuma Castle, Mountain castle in Kakamigahara, Japan.
Unuma Castle is a medieval fortress on a rocky hill on the northern bank of the Kiso River in Gifu. The structure uses natural terrain features and sits at an elevation of about 89 meters (292 feet).
The fortress was founded in the early 1400s and later changed hands during conflicts between regional powers. These struggles shaped the building until the region found stability.
The fortress shows medieval Japanese building methods, using natural rock formations as a defensive element. Its location along the Kiso River was chosen to protect and control the surrounding area.
The site is easy to reach with a short walk from a nearby train station. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the climb up the hill is steep and rocky.
After World War II, the castle hill housed a guesthouse and an American club, an unusual use of the historical site. A fire in 1972 ended this unusual chapter completely.
