Kakamigahara, Industrial city in Gifu Prefecture, Japan
Kakamigahara is a city in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, that spreads across the northern Nobi Plain and is bordered by the Kiso River to the south. Mountains rise in the northern section, while the flat areas hold industrial facilities and residential neighborhoods.
The settlement began as Unuma-juku, a rest stop along the Nakasendo road that linked Edo with Kyoto during feudal times. Later the area developed into a center for aerospace and vehicle manufacturing.
The name means 'mirror field' and refers to the flat plains that once reflected water like a mirror. Today locals use the green spaces and riverbanks for daily walks and weekend outings into nature.
The area is easily accessible via main roads and train lines that connect it to larger neighboring cities. Visitors can explore the surroundings on foot or by bicycle, especially along the park areas and riverbanks.
The local aerospace museum displays exhibits about aircraft technology that reflect the connection to the air force base. Visitors also see original aircraft and technical models from different eras of aviation.
