Ōta River Bridge, Highway crossing over Ōta River in Hiroshima, Japan.
The Ōta River Bridge is a highway bridge crossing the river in Hiroshima, connecting the city center to the southern areas. It serves Route 3 of the Hiroshima Expressway and features a design that balances traffic capacity with river navigation requirements.
Local authorities approved the project in 2004 as part of expanding Hiroshima's expressway network. The structure was completed in 2014 and has since integrated into the city's traffic system.
The bridge design by Kenichi Nishiyama from Eight-Japan Engineering Consultants emerged as the winner of an international competition held in 2008.
The bridge is easily accessible during regular hours and has a smooth roadway suitable for all vehicle sizes. Walking paths are available on the sides, and signage makes navigation straightforward for all users.
The structure combines prestressed concrete with a steel arch reinforcement system that was developed through an international design competition. This innovative engineering approach earned recognition from Japan's leading civil engineering society.
