Kawagoe City Industry and Tourism Center, Commercial heritage center in Kawagoe, Japan.
The Kawagoe City Industry and Tourism Center occupies three traditional sake storehouses known as Meiji Kura, Taisho Kura, and Showa Kura, which together span about 3,064 square meters. These buildings house shops selling local goods, restaurants featuring regional dishes, and tasting spaces where visitors can sample sake.
The complex originated as the Kagamiyama Brewery, which operated from 1875 until 2000 before being transformed into this center. It received official status as a registered cultural property in March 2008.
The three storehouses reflect architectural styles from different Japanese eras, showing how traditional building methods shaped the spaces for everyday use. Visitors can see how these design choices are still part of how people move through and experience the buildings today.
The center is easy to navigate on foot and the buildings are logically arranged throughout the downtown area. Visitors should allow enough time to browse the shops, eat at the restaurants, and enjoy the tasting experiences without rushing.
The storehouses feature thick earthen walls that once stored heat and maintained steady temperatures during sake production. This sturdy construction method is still visible today and explains why the buildings feel so solid and long-lasting.
