Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design, Art and design museum in Toyama, Japan

The Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design is a contemporary art institution with galleries displaying works by international artists including Picasso and Chagall alongside Japanese creators. The collection combines paintings, sculptures, photographs, and design objects spanning different periods and styles.

The institution opened its doors in 1981 and relocated to its present building in 2017, designed by architect Hiroshi Naito near Fugan Canal. This move to the new location allowed for expanded gallery spaces and improved facilities to support the growing collection.

The museum holds one of Japan's largest poster collections and hosts the International Poster Triennial, bringing together graphic design from around the world for local audiences to discover.

The museum is reachable within 20 minutes from Toyama Station's Central Exit by bus, taxi, or on foot through Kansui Park. The area is flat and easy to navigate, with clear signs and good walkways leading to the entrance.

The Onomatopoeia Rooftop features visual interpretations of Japanese sound words created by designer Taku Satoh while framing views of Mount Tateyama. This playful design element merges local culture with landscape in an unexpected way.
