Fugan Canal Kansui Park, Urban park and waterfront next to Toyama Station, Japan
Fugan Canal Kansui Park is an urban park beside Toyama Station featuring pathways along the canal that connect to viewing platforms and the Tenmon Bridge. The space opens directly to the water and offers views toward the Tateyama Mountain Range from multiple spots throughout the grounds.
The canal was built in 1935 as a water transportation route between two harbors and served shipping traffic for decades. In the 1990s the waterway was repurposed into a public park, transforming old infrastructure into a gathering place for residents and visitors.
The Nakajima Lock Gate reflects European water engineering methods that were adopted during the Showa period, blending foreign technical knowledge into the local landscape. Visitors walking through can see how this structure embodies that historical exchange of ideas between East and West.
The park is open 24 hours daily with parking available and illuminated areas for evening visits. The grounds are flat and straightforward to walk through, with clear pathways running alongside the waterway.
The Nakajima Lock system is one of Japan's few still-operating water lift mechanisms from that era. It gently raises and lowers boats across a 2.5-meter height difference using an ingenious double-door system.
