Kinu-Tateiwa Suspension Bridge, Pedestrian suspension bridge in Kinugawa Onsen, Japan
The Kinu-Tateiwa Suspension Bridge is a steel footbridge over the Kinugawa River, near the hot spring resort of Kinugawa Onsen in the Nikko region. It connects the resort side of the riverbank to a rocky formation on the opposite shore.
The bridge was built in the early 2000s as part of efforts to give visitors better access to the natural features around Kinugawa Onsen. It added a crossing point to an already existing network of riverside trails.
The name "Tateiwa" means "standing rock" in Japanese, referring directly to the jagged rock formation visible from the bridge on the far bank. Crossing the bridge gives a clear view of this formation, which is the focal point of the whole site.
The bridge is within walking distance of Kinugawa Onsen Station and is free to cross. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the surface can become slippery after rain.
Just past the bridge, a hand-carved tunnel cut into the rock leads to a small waterfall that most visitors never reach. The tunnel is narrow and low, adding a sense of discovery that stands out from the rest of the walk.
