Pigment, Art materials laboratory in Tennōzu Isle, Japan
Pigment is an arts venue on Tennōzu Isle that gives artists and creators access to over 4,000 color pigments, 200 traditional ink sticks, and 600 different brush types. The space combines a working laboratory where materials are made with a retail area, allowing you to see both how things are produced and purchase supplies.
The Terrada warehouse company created this specialized arts space to preserve and promote traditional Japanese painting materials and methods. The project grew from a commitment to keep craft skills and artistic knowledge alive for future generations.
The space introduces visitors to traditional Japanese painting methods through direct engagement with materials and techniques. You can observe and try how artisans prepare natural pigments and work with inks the way masters have for centuries.
The venue is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 AM to 7 PM and sits close to Tennozu Isle Station with simple access. Arriving in the morning or early afternoon works best if you want to see demonstrations or join a workshop, as spaces fill up quickly.
Architect Kengo Kuma designed the building using bamboo elements throughout its structure, reflecting a connection to Japanese natural philosophy. The building itself becomes a statement about how modern design can honor traditional craftsmanship.
