Old Yoshimatsu house, Kushima, Historic house in Kushima, Japan
The Old Yoshimatsu House is a traditional residence in Kushima with tatami mats, sliding doors, and detailed woodwork showing classic Japanese home design. The two-story section retains its original construction with dark wooden beams and an artfully designed stairwell.
The house was originally built as a residence for a farming family during the late Edo period. After a fire in 1905, it was reconstructed in 1907 and partially renewed.
Inside, you can see works by local calligrapher Momohong Shinoda displayed in a gallery space, which adds an artistic layer to the historical setting.
The house is fairly accessible, but plan your visit in advance since parking space is limited. Wear appropriate footwear since you may need to remove your shoes when entering certain rooms.
The two-story section dates from 1876 and preserves its original structure with distinctive dark wooden beams. The hand-crafted stairwell in this section is a notable example of the woodcarving skill of that time.
