Shiseido Art House, Art museum in Kakegawa, Japan.
Shiseido Art House is an art museum in Kakegawa, Japan, displaying contemporary paintings and sculptures across two floors inside a reinforced concrete building. The exhibition spaces are clearly laid out, giving each work room to be seen without crowding.
The museum was founded in 1978 by the Shiseido Corporation, and the building received the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize the following year. Architects Yoshio Taniguchi and Shinsuke Takamiya designed the structure, which is now considered a notable example of postwar Japanese architecture.
The collection was built by a Japanese cosmetics company, showing how a private enterprise can support contemporary art over many decades. Visitors can see paintings and sculptures by both Japanese and international artists displayed in a focused, unhurried setting.
Admission is free, and staff are on hand to help visitors find their way around. Informational materials are available in English and Chinese, which makes the visit easier for those who do not read Japanese.
Right next to the museum stands a corporate museum that traces the company's history back to 1872 through packaging, advertisements, and promotional materials. This side of the visit offers a look at how a cosmetics brand shaped its public image over more than a century.
