Takayama Castle

Takayama Castle is a fortress ruin on a hilltop in Toki, with stone walls and foundations from the early 1600s. The site spreads across several levels, and from the top you can see the river valley and the surrounding hills.

The Kanamori clan built this fortress in the early 1600s as part of their defense network for the region. It served as a key military post for several decades before eventually being abandoned.

The ruins show how Japanese military builders used stone walls and hilltop placement to control the region. Walking through the site, you can see how the fortress design reflected the needs of its time.

The site is reachable on foot from JR Toki Station or by car from nearby roads. The path uphill is steep in places, so wearing sturdy shoes is important for a comfortable visit.

Excavations at the site have uncovered ceramic pieces that show Toki's connection to a major pottery production center. These artifacts link the fortress's military story to the region's craft heritage.
