Sakurajima service area, Service area on Kyushu Expressway in Aira, Japan
Sakurajima service area is a roadside rest stop on the Kyushu Expressway in Aira, Kagoshima Prefecture, where drivers can take a break during their journey. The facility has separate sections for each direction of travel, each offering restaurants, a convenience store, restrooms, and parking.
The stop takes its name from Sakurajima, a volcano that has shaped the landscape around Kagoshima Bay for centuries. In 1914, a large eruption connected the previously isolated volcanic island to the Osumi Peninsula, turning it into a peninsula itself.
Many travelers stop here specifically to catch a view of Sakurajima, which locals in the Kagoshima region regard as a familiar and ever-present landmark. The shops carry regional products from Kagoshima, giving the stop a flavor of the local area rather than a generic highway feel.
The service area is clearly signed from the expressway, with separate entrances for each direction of travel so drivers do not need to cross traffic. Parking, restrooms, and the main building are close together, making it easy to get back on the road quickly.
On clear days, drivers stopping here can sometimes spot Sakurajima releasing ash or gas into the sky, something that can happen several hundred times in a single year at this volcano. It is rare to find an ordinary highway rest stop with a direct line of sight to one of Japan's most active volcanoes.
