Ponte del Mare, Cable-stayed bridge in Pescara, Italy
Ponte del Mare is a cable-stayed bridge spanning 466 meters across the Pescara River with separate pathways for cyclists and pedestrians. A central pylon supports the entire structure through steel cables, connecting different districts of the city.
The Municipality of Pescara commissioned the Pichler architecture firm to design this infrastructure project, which was completed and opened in 2009. The work emerged as part of the city's contemporary development.
The bridge serves as a gathering place where residents come together for outdoor events and concerts throughout the year. These moments shape the daily rhythm of city life and community bonds.
Access is available from both riverbanks, and the paths allow free movement on foot or by bicycle. Early mornings or late afternoons offer the best experience, when sunlight creates interesting effects on the steel structure.
The structure features three-dimensional cable patterns that form conical surfaces and shift in appearance based on changing light conditions. This geometry transforms every time of day into a different visual experience when crossing.
