Museo dell'Ottocento, Art museum in Pescara, Italy
The Museo dell'Ottocento is an art museum in Pescara displaying Italian and French paintings from the 19th century. The collection of approximately 260 works is arranged across three floors in fifteen thematically organized exhibition rooms.
The museum opened in September 2021 in a former Bank of Italy building, following thirty years of art collecting by two dedicated collectors. The establishment of this space marked the realization of a long-term project to preserve these 19th-century paintings.
The collection features works by artists such as Gustave Courbet, Giuseppe De Nittis, and Antonio Mancini, representing movements like the Barbizon School and the School of Posillipo. Paintings are displayed in their original frames from multiple centuries, highlighting the relationship between each artwork and its historical presentation.
The museum welcomes visitors during standard opening hours, and visitors should plan for several hours to explore the collection thoroughly. The rooms are distributed across three floors, allowing for comfortable viewing and breaks between sections.
The exhibition displays paintings not in modern standard frames but in original period frames from various historical eras. This choice connects the artworks directly to their authentic presentation and gives visitors a genuine sense of how the artists intended their works to be shown.
