Iwakura Castle

Iwakura Castle is a medieval fortress site located in Owari, Japan, with the grounds marked by double moats and earthen ramparts. These defensive structures divide the castle grounds into distinct sections that guided movement through the settlement.

The fortress was founded in 1479 by a branch of the Oda clan and controlled strategic areas for roughly 80 years. It was abandoned after falling to military expansion in 1559.

Stone monuments at the castle site, including one erected in 1860, serve as educational markers for local schools teaching regional history.

The site sits about 15 minutes on foot from the nearest train station and is easily reached. There are no dedicated parking facilities nearby, so public transport is the best way to visit.

Archaeological digs at the site have uncovered wells, artificial pits, and high-quality Chinese ceramics. These discoveries point to where the castle's main administrative centers once stood.
