San Pietro Church

San Pietro Church is a basilica in Modena featuring a Renaissance facade built with fired bricks, marble portals, and rose windows. The exterior displays relief carvings with mythological and marine subjects along the frieze.

A Benedictine abbey was established here in 983 by Bishop Hildebrandus. The current church structure was rebuilt between 1476 and 1518.

The interior displays six terracotta sculptures by Antonio Begarelli showing religious figures including the Madonna and various saints. These works form an important part of the artistic heritage visitors can experience inside.

The church is open to visitors during daytime hours, typically in two separate periods. It is best to visit outside of mass times if you want to explore quietly.

A historical column called Saint Peter's Cross stands in front of the church, an exceptionally old Christian monument dating before the 11th century. This artifact reveals the city's early religious roots.
