The church features a Renaissance facade with fired bricks, marble portals, rose windows, and reliefs depicting mythological and marine subjects on the frieze.
The Benedictine Abbey of San Pietro was established in 983 by Bishop Hildebrandus, while the current church structure was rebuilt between 1476 and 1518.
The interior displays six terracotta sculptures by Antonio Begarelli, including representations of Madonna, San Francesco, San Pietro, San Bonaventura, Santa Giustina, and San Benedetto.
The church welcomes visitors daily from 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with multiple mass services throughout the week.
A historical column called Saint Peter's Cross stands in front of the church, representing one of the oldest Christian remnants in Modena from before the 11th century.
