Teatro Comunale di Modena, Opera house in Modena, Italy.
The Teatro Comunale di Modena is an opera house in the center of Modena, with an auditorium surrounded by four tiers of boxes and neoclassical details throughout the interior. The different levels offer varying views of the stage and together seat over 900 people.
The building was constructed in the mid-19th century with support from Duke Francis IV, replacing an older theater on Via Emilia that had become too small for opera productions. Over time it grew into one of the main venues for music in the Emilia region.
The theater officially bears the name of Luciano Pavarotti, the tenor born in Modena who grew up in the city and performed on this stage. His name above the entrance immediately reminds visitors of the close bond between the city and the world of opera.
The theater sits in the center of Modena and is easy to reach on foot from most of the old town. Arriving a little early gives you time to look around the interior before the performance begins.
Although the building is closely linked to Pavarotti's name, the tenor began his career in much smaller venues around the city before reaching world fame. The theater was renamed in his honor only after his death in 2007.
