Ducal Palace of Modena, Baroque palace in Piazza Roma, Modena, Italy
The Ducal Palace of Modena is a baroque building featuring a prominent central tower with five tiers of columns, flanked by two lateral towers. The facade spans three stories with carefully designed elements that display the refinement of baroque style.
Construction of the palace began in 1634 under Francesco I d'Este, representing a major statement of ducal power. The building later became home to the Military Academy, shifting its purpose from princely residence to institution of learning.
This palace houses the Military Academy and displays weapons, armor, and uniforms spanning different periods. Visitors can explore the collections within the historic rooms and gain insight into the military heritage of the region.
The interior is accessible mainly through guided tours offered on weekends and should be reserved in advance through the local tourist office. Plan enough time to properly explore the rooms and check current visiting conditions beforehand.
A special feature is the Golden Salon, where removable wall panels are decorated with real gold leaf, representing a rare example of European decorative craft from the 1700s. These precious ornaments stand out as highlights of the artistic work found inside the building.
