New Yashima Aquarium

New Yashima Aquarium is a public facility in Takamatsu that houses over 1,000 animals representing 130 species across 80 tanks. The tanks display marine life from tropical regions alongside cold-water species.

The facility opened in 1969 as Yashima Mountaintop Aquarium and introduced large acrylic tanks in 1970. These tanks became the global standard for modern aquarium construction.

The facility hosts daily dolphin shows where visitors watch these animals perform, along with feeding areas for manatees, penguins, and sea turtles. You can participate in these interactions and observe the animals while they eat.

The facility sits at a convenient location and is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM, making it easy to visit. Plan to spend several hours exploring the entire space, particularly if you want to catch the performances.

The facility keeps two West Indian manatees, one of only two locations in Japan where these marine mammals can be seen. These rare animals attract many visitors each year.
