Shoujuin

Shoujuin is a Buddhist temple in Ujitawara featuring traditional Japanese architecture, including a heart-shaped window in the guest hall that frames seasonal garden views. The complex houses a seated statue of Fudo Myoo and sits within a landscape shaped by classical temple design and surrounding woodland.

Founded some 800 years ago as a branch temple of Ioukyoji, the site carries a long lineage of Buddhist practice passed down through the centuries. The seated statue within, created by Kamakura period sculptor Kaikei, connects visitors to the temple's oldest roots.

The temple embodies Shingon Buddhist traditions that shape how visitors experience the space through ritual practices and sacred objects throughout the year. The monthly fire ceremonies connect the community to centuries-old spiritual customs that remain visible and meaningful to those who visit.

The temple can be reached by bus from Uji Station, with stops near the main approach. Visitors should plan for morning to afternoon hours and wear comfortable shoes since exploring the grounds involves walking through gardens and the surrounding landscape.

Over the summer months, thousands of wind chimes are hung across the grounds, creating a ringing soundscape that becomes part of the seasonal experience. This temporary installation turns the otherwise serene setting into a multi-sensory moment that many visitors do not anticipate or remember.
