井寺古墳, Circular burial mound in Kashima, Japan
The Idera Kofun is a circular burial mound in Kashima with a stone chamber inside. The chamber measures 2.94 meters long, 2.47 meters wide, and 3.08 meters high.
The burial mound was built between the late 5th and early 6th centuries and reflects the burial practices of that era. It was officially designated as a National Historic Site in 1921.
The stone chamber walls showcase geometric patterns painted with red, white, blue, and green mineral pigments, representing a rare example of ancient artistic skill from this period.
The site is best reached by taxi from JR Minami-Kumamoto Station, with parking available at nearby Ukishima Park. Getting there requires some planning since it is not directly served by public transportation.
The mound was damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, leading to increased preservation efforts at the site. The cracks visible in the structure today serve as a reminder of how nature can affect ancient monuments.
