International Library of Children's Literature
International Library of Children's Literature, Children's library in Ueno Park, Japan
The International Library of Children's Literature is a library in Ueno-kōen housing over 700,000 books for young readers from around the world. The building offers separate reading rooms for different age groups and low shelves that all children can easily reach.
The building was constructed in 1906 as the Imperial Library and underwent renovation in 2015 while preserving its red brick style. This redesign connected the original structure with modern additions.
The collection displays traditional fairy tales and modern children's books from many countries, connecting young readers with stories from around the world. Visitors can see how these works are arranged in reading areas designed for different age groups.
Visitors should expect wide, bright spaces designed for reading with children of any age. Nursing rooms with water heaters and stairs between levels make navigation straightforward.
A modern glass pavilion, designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, connects the old red brick structure to a contemporary addition. This contrast between old and new becomes immediately visible upon entering the grounds.
