筒井家住宅, Registered Cultural Property in Sakai, Japan

The Tsutsui Family Residence is a preserved Japanese wooden dwelling with carefully crafted roof structures and traditional building elements throughout. The building shows typical features of homes occupied by merchant families during the early modern period.

The house was built during the Edo period, when Sakai was an important trading hub and merchants became wealthy and influential. This era shaped the building's architecture and structure, which has survived to the present day.

The residence shows how well-to-do families lived day to day, with rooms arranged for different seasons and daily activities. You can still see how work areas, family spaces, and guest quarters were carefully separated from one another.

Access to the site requires advance planning, as opening times are limited and may not be available daily. It is wise to contact the local tourism office before visiting to learn about current conditions and any required registration.

The house uses wooden joinery techniques that work without nails, allowing it to remain stable over centuries. These carpentry methods are a rare example of Japanese craftsmanship that is difficult to find today.
