Letpadaung Copper Mine

The Letpadaung Mine contains extensive copper deposits at 162 meters elevation, operated by Wanbao Mining Ltd in partnership with Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited.

Mining operations began in 2016 after initial agreements in 2010, following the transfer from Canadian company Ivanhoe which held rights since 1994.

The displacement of a Buddhist pagoda and confrontations with monks in 2012 generated strong reactions in this religious community.

Access to the mining site requires coordination with local authorities due to ongoing security measures and restricted areas within the complex.

The mine generates significant revenue while facing continuous protests from local farmers who report crop damage from contaminated drainage water.
