Laykyun Sekkya, Buddhist monument in Monywa Township, Myanmar
Laykyun Sekkya is a monumental standing Buddha made of reinforced concrete in Monywa Township, rising from a broad pedestal above rice fields. The golden-painted figure shows the Buddha with one hand raised in blessing and the other pointing downward.
Construction started in 1996 on the initiative of local community leaders and took twelve years to complete. The erection followed a long tradition of monumental Buddhist sculptures in the Sagaing Region over centuries.
The name refers to a famous Buddhist teaching figure, and worshippers walk clockwise around the base with incense and prayer beads. On festival days, monks gather here to chant together and drape flower garlands across the lower sections.
The complex sits about 20 kilometers south of Monywa and is best visited during daylight when the sun illuminates the golden surface. Steps lead up to middle levels but require stamina and sturdy footwear.
The inner chambers contain wall paintings showing scenes from the life of the Buddha, which visitors discover during the climb. From the highest accessible point, the view extends over a gentle plain with pagodas and green fields.
