Artis, Zoo, aquarium and museum in Plantage, Netherlands
Artis is a zoological garden, aquarium, and museum in Amsterdam's Plantage neighborhood, housed on expansive grounds with mature trees and historic buildings. Several thematic zones display animals from different continents, scientific collections, and a planetarium operating inside a restored 19th-century hall.
The facility opened in 1838 by a private society and developed into the oldest zoological garden in the Netherlands, with structures from that era still standing today. During the 20th century, the aquarium and natural history museum were gradually added, turning the complex into a scientific center.
Families spend the day between animal enclosures and the manicured gardens, where groups of students and children often gather in front of the aquariums or inside the planetarium. Amsterdam locals use the grounds regularly as a quiet retreat within the densely populated center, even outside peak visiting hours.
The pathways are wheelchair-accessible throughout and wind through shaded areas with benches for resting. Visitors who arrive early in the morning will find fewer crowds and can observe the animals calmly, especially before midday.
The Groote Museum, housed in a separate building, combines natural history specimens with contemporary art installations, offering uncommon perspectives on the relationship between humans and animals. The collection also includes anatomical models and interactive rooms that explore sensory perception.
