Bytów Castle, Medieval castle in Bytów, Poland
Bytów Castle is a rectangular fortress with three round towers and a square Gunpowder Tower positioned at the northeast corner. The complex now contains a municipal library and exhibition rooms with historical collections.
The fortress was founded in 1398 as a stronghold of the Teutonic Knights and served as their administrative seat. Following the decline of their power, the castle was used and modified by different rulers over several centuries.
The West Kashubian Museum in the North Wing displays local crafts, clothing, and everyday objects from the region. Visitors can see how people lived and worked here over time.
The site is easy to reach on foot and well marked with information signs about the history and different areas. There are benches and rest areas around the complex for visitors who want to take their time.
The round towers of the castle are among the earliest examples of artillery towers in Europe and show how fortress design adapted to firearms. Their shape was groundbreaking and later influenced the construction of similar defensive towers.
