Oświęcim Castle, Gothic castle in Oświęcim, Poland.
Oświęcim Castle is a medieval fortification built on a hilltop beside the Soła River, featuring a four-sided defensive tower and residential buildings arranged around an inner courtyard. The site sits at the edge of the old town and can be seen from a distance.
The castle dates back to the late 12th century and served for centuries as the seat of the Dukes of Oświęcim. Over time it changed hands repeatedly and gradually lost its military role.
The museum inside displays collections of documents, stamps, coins, maps, books, and photographs that tell the story of the town. These objects give you a sense of how people lived and worked in this region across different time periods.
The entrance to the site is on the hilltop, which is easy to reach on foot from the town center. It is worth checking opening times before your visit, as the site is not open every day.
Under the castle there are two tunnel systems: one built before 1914 and another dug by German forces between 1940 and 1944. These underground passages are not open to the public but their existence is well documented.
