Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Oświęcim, Gothic Catholic church in Oświęcim, Poland.
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a three-nave Catholic church in Oświęcim with a rectangular chancel and western tower anchoring its Gothic form. The interior features elaborate stucco decorations covering the ceiling and supporting pillars throughout the space.
The church replaced an earlier wooden structure from the 12th century that was destroyed during a Tartar raid. Major renovation work was completed in 1881, bringing the building to its current form.
The main altar displays life-size sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, along with three post-Dominican images from the eighteenth century depicting religious figures.
The church is located in central Oświęcim and welcomes visitors during the week. It is advisable to check opening times before visiting, as regular services are held there.
The building contains a marble baptistery with a metal lid dating to 1613. Marble epitaphs adorning the walls record members of the community who passed away, including Father Jerome Russocki memorialized in 1681.
