Бисерно острво, River island near Bečej, Serbia
Biserno Ostrvo is a river island in Serbia, surrounded by the waters of the Tisa River near the town of Becoj. The land is a mix of farmland and natural waterways, with parts of the territory falling under different levels of nature protection.
In the medieval period, the Tisa River shifted its course significantly, forming the territory that is now known as the island. Those shifts left behind old river channels and fertile alluvial soils that still define the land today.
The name Biserno Ostrvo translates roughly to Pearl Island, a reference to the fertile soils that have drawn farmers to work the land for centuries. Walking through the fields and orchards, you get a clear sense of how farming still shapes life on the island today.
The island is best explored on foot or by bicycle, as there is no fixed tourist infrastructure in place. Visiting during the warmer months makes it easier to move around, since paths and fields are far more accessible at that time of year.
A local grape variety called Krokan has been grown on the island for generations, thriving in the soil along an old river channel. This wine is rarely found outside the region and remains closely tied to the small farms that have cultivated it over time.
