Dekabristov bridge, Steel bridge in Admiralteysky District, Russia.
Dekabristov Bridge is a steel structure that crosses the Kryukov Canal in Saint Petersburg, linking Kolomensky and Kazansky Islands. The bridge features ten riveted steel beams with a beam system design, measuring about 29 meters long and 23 meters wide.
The structure was first built between 1783 and 1787 as a wooden bridge to connect the two islands. In 1914, engineer A.P. Pshenitsky redesigned it as a steel structure, widening the span to accommodate modern traffic needs.
The bridge was named in 1923 to honor Russian military officers who led an uprising against Tsar Nicholas I in 1825. This naming connects the structure to a pivotal moment in Russian reform movements that visitors can learn about while crossing.
The crossing has five traffic lanes and sidewalks separated by granite curbs, offering space for both vehicles and pedestrians. Traffic tends to be heavy during peak hours, but the walkways remain accessible and comfortable for walking at all times.
The middle span has a slightly concave curve underneath that provides extra clearance for boats passing beneath. This engineering detail reflects how early twentieth-century builders balanced water navigation needs with urban traffic demands.
