Tsushima obelisk

The Tsushima obelisk is a granite and bronze monument standing approximately 8.5 meters tall in Nikolsky Garden near Saint Nicholas Naval Cathedral. Its surface features carved battle scenes and memorial plaques bearing the names of those who perished.

The monument was erected in 1908 to commemorate the crew of the battleship Imperator Alexander III, who died during the Battle of Tsushima in the Russo-Japanese War. This naval conflict altered the balance of power in Asia and sent shockwaves through the Russian Empire.

The monument honors sailors who died in battle and serves as a place where visitors can pay respects to the fallen. It stands within Nikolsky Garden as a focal point for remembering those who served in the Russian Navy.

Architect Yakow Filotey designed the structure while sculptor Artemiy Ober crafted the detailed bronze reliefs showing naval battles and maritime scenes. This artistic partnership resulted in a memorial that combines technical skill with emotional weight.
